CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Jorge Nuñez agreed to be deputized and to go out searching for the black Jeep and its driver. He would carry a walkie–talkie, which he knew from experience would only work if it felt like it. Everyone else on Gonzalo’s A–list, people who had been deputized before, backed out. It was three o’clock and a door–to–door search would take hours. Besides, this was no car vandal or shoplifter hiding in the woods; this was a cold–blooded killer of men, women, and children. Many had seen the city squad cars and the officers from Naranjito. If these police couldn’t handle the situation, then the citizens of Angustias were better off not stepping out into what could be the line of fire.

Gonzalo made a few calls to a B–list he had in mind, but there were no takers there either, and after three or four rejections, he gave up. The whole town mustered one person willing to risk himself. Even Rafael Ramirez had declined the honor of hunting a murderer in the forests. Gonzalo thought about asking Collazo to get back to work, but decided against it. His friend had done enough.

Next, he started on phone calls to ask about the mayor’s San Juan connections. Two phone calls to acquaintances in the San Juan police and two to low–level government officials Gonzalo knew turned up nothing incriminating about the connections. Each call provided him with a few more names to inquire about. The only interesting thing about the conversations he had was that though the people he spoke to knew more about Primavera’s San Juan days than either Gonzalo or Rafael Ramirez, none of them said anything to clear the mayor of anything. Gonzalo got the impression that Primavera had been a yes–man in San Juan, going along with whatever seemed right to his superiors. This was despicable in its way, but then Primavera had been a young man, still was, and nothing tied him to the drug trade, or Daniel del Valle, or Fidel Castro.

Gonzalo jotted down the extra names he had collected and tried to put a relevant note next to each one for further review. He tore the sheet out of his notepad and locked it into his lap drawer. If the mayor came in or asked to review the notes of the case, there was no need for him to see that he himself was the subject of some investigation.

Gonzalo stood up and stretched. It was now nearing four o’clock. He wanted to check in with the mayor, Maria Garcia, and Iris Calderon before checking in with Hector to see how the search was going and with the detectives to ask if they’d found anything relevant. Then he wanted to eat. He hadn’t had lunch yet. He walked out and around to the alcaldia.

The plaza in front of the government building was deserted. Gonzalo went up the steps and through the double doors. He went into the mayor’s office without knocking. Inside, Primavera was speaking in hushed tones with his deputy mayor.
